Downloads are JPG. Transparent areas become white. Large images may be resized to meet the size limit; animated images are not supported.
Getting a clear image under 50 KB
A 50 KB limit leaves little room for detailed photographs. This preset can be useful when an upload form explicitly asks for a small JPG, such as a portrait or signature. It does not crop, rotate or change the background for you.
Start with a tightly framed original rather than a full-page scan with large empty margins. After compression, zoom in and check the face, signature strokes or small text. If detail is lost, try a simpler source image and confirm the form's required dimensions.
50 KB versus 100 KB
Choose 50 KB only when the smaller limit is required. If the form permits 100 KB or 200 KB, the larger allowance can retain more detail. Always keep the original for a later submission.
How to reduce your image size
- Choose the maximum file size required by your upload form.
- Select a JPG, PNG or static WebP image from your device.
- Press Compress, inspect the preview, then download your JPG.
Check the form's pixel dimensions and file-format rules separately. Meeting a file-size limit alone does not guarantee your image will be accepted.
What happens to your image?
FileMelon adjusts JPG quality and, when needed, reduces pixel dimensions. Your original file stays unchanged. Processing happens on your device; the image is not sent to our server.
Frequently asked questions
Will the result be exactly the selected size?
No. The target is a maximum: 50 KB means at most 50,000 bytes. A smaller result is normal. FileMelon uses decimal KB, which is slightly stricter than the same number of KiB.
Can I keep PNG transparency?
This tool downloads JPG files. Transparent areas become white. Keep your original PNG if you need a transparent background.
Why can a small PNG become a larger JPG?
Converting formats can increase file size, especially for simple graphics. The result still stays within your selected limit. If your original already meets the form's requirements, you may prefer to use it.
Which files can I use?
JPG, PNG and static WebP files up to 20 MiB and 40 megapixels. Animated images are not supported. A modern browser with JavaScript enabled is required. Very large images can be demanding on older devices.
Starting with an HEIC or AVIF photo?
Convert HEIC / HEIF to JPG or convert AVIF to JPG first, then return here with the downloaded JPG. For official applications, check that conversion is allowed; keep your original photo.
